Desctription

The ukiyo-e master Hokusai is known for Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, but this particular work is from another series that illustrates meanings found in a collection of classical Japanese poetry titled Ogura Hyakunin Isshu. The colorful landscapes were produced in a printmaking process that involved layer upon layer of colors. In this work, which follows the theme of an Ono no Takamura poem, abalone-collecting female divers are shown swimming in amusing ways.
