Playback! Millennium 1991-2001: Transcending Boundaries by and through Printmaking

Planned Exhibition

Exhibition Outline

The 1990s and early 2000s have recently seen a resurgence of interest through "Y2K" and "Heisei Retro" culture in Japan. During this era—which opened the new millennium with a blend of apocalyptic anxiety and hope—the world of printmaking explored new expressions that pushed beyond traditional boundaries, such as fusion with photography and 3D works, the creation of large-scale works, and the utilization of digital technology. This movement was further supported by international print exhibitions organized by local governments, a legacy of the economic boom.
This exhibition looks back on this era through approximately 100 works, focusing on five "contemporary" print exhibitions held at the Machida City Museum of Graphic Arts and the Kanagawa Kenmin Hall, as well as the museum's public workshops. It traces the footsteps of international exchange through prints, experiments in borderless expression, and perspectives reflecting on the 20th century as a "century of war."
